What Does U and q stand for?

Postby charlotte_jacobs_4I » Thu Jan 31, 2019 11:02 am

In many of the problems in the homework there were equations with U and q. What do these variables stand for?

U is the internal energy and q is the heat transfer

is the overall change in internal energy of a system, and q is heat!

The first law of thermodynamics: Delta U= Q + W states that the change in internal energy of a system (Delta U) equals the net heat transfer into the system Q, plus the net work done on the system W.

ΔU: change in internal energy U of the system.
Q : net heat transferred into the system
Q: the sum of all heat transfer into and out of the system.

ΔU = q+w

ΔU = Internal Energy
q = Net heat transfer in the system
w = Work being done in the system

Delta U signifies the change in internal energy.
q refers to the energy transferred by heating.
w is the energy transferred by compression.
