Phase change and temperature

Postby Jasmin Argueta 1K » Thu Jan 31, 2019 10:14 pm

In the ice to steam energy graph how does energy not effect temperature during a phase change? I understand energy is needed to break the bonds in order to complete the phase change but how does that same energy needed not increasing the kinetic energy of the molecules?

All of the energy used in a phase change is used to break or form the bonds, and none of it to speed up the kinetic energy of the molecules or increase the temperature.

Temperature of a substance does not change during a phase change. If heat is coming into a substance during a phase change, then this energy is used to break the bonds between the molecules of the substance.

all of the energy used is for the transition phase so doesn't get used up.
