Phase Change and Temperature

Postby Katherine Grillo 1B » Tue Feb 12, 2019 9:27 pm

Why doesn't temperature change during a phase change? I understand how to interpret the heating curve for water but why is a substance able to absorb so much heat without changing temperature?

The heat being added is energy, and that energy goes toward changing the phase, breaking bonds, not towards heating the substance.

During a phase change, the energy is used to either form or break bonds, rather than increase the temperature of the substance by increasing its kinetic energy.

The change in temperature means that the kinetic energy of molecules is changing. While in the phase change, the substance is changing its potential energy. Thus the temperature does not change.
