The internal energy of a system increased by 982 J when it was supplied with 492 J of energy as heat. (a) Was work done by or on the system? (b) How much work was done?

What’s the difference between work being done on or by the system and how do you know?

Work is a positive value when more work is done by the system than on it. So if the value for work is negative, then work was done on the system. If the value for work is positive, then work was done by the system
