### Entropy vs Enthalpy

Can someone explain the relationship between Entropy and Enthalpy if there is one?

enthalpy is the amount of heat that is released or absorbed in a reaction whereas entropy is the degree of disorder. Generally, it takes energy to go from more disordered to less disordered, and energy is released when you go from less disorder to more disorder. Enthalpy and entropy are related in the equation deltaG= deltaH-T*deltaS.

In high school chem, we also used the word "chaotic" to describe entropy. Usually, we used it for different phases, because gases would be more disordered/chaotic than liquids and solids.

### Re: Entropy vs Enthalpy

Enthalpy is the total amount of energy absorbed or released in a chemical reaction. It's made up of two components: one of them is usable energy that is stored in the chemical bonds of whatever molecule is formed (which is called free energy - G), entropy is the energy that is released and is unusable.

Great question! I too was confused by this in lecture.

What does each term relate to in the equation deltaG= deltaH-T*deltaS?

I believe delta G is gibbs free energy, Delta H is enthalpy, and delta S is entropy. T is temperature.

Gibbs free energy = Enthalpy - Temperature * Entropy.

Entropy is the amount of disorder there is in a system. Enthalpy is part of the function that is used to determine enthalpy, which is DeltaG= Enthalph- TdeltaS

### Re: Entropy vs Enthalpy

Entropy is a measure of disorder in the universe whereas enthalpy is how much heat is absorbed or released in a given reaction
