### State property

Can someone explain what a state property is exactly and what this means in the context of enthalpy?

A state property is a quantity that is independent of how the substance arrived at that state. Examples of state properties are altitude, pressure, volume, temperature and internal energy.

A good way to imagine this is Dr. Lavelle's mountain example of the mountain, where one group takes a longer path, but arrives at the same altitude as a group that did less work. The altitude is a state property. This is why enthalpy is a state function, because it only depends on the state of the system and not on the path that was taken to reach its value.

A state property is a property that is not dependent on the path taken to get to that state. Therefore, it's value is only determined by it's current state. For example, volume is a state property because it doesn't matter how that volume was obtained, so it's value is only determined by it's current volume. This means that we can subtract values of the volume to find the total change in volume. In contrast, work depends on the path taken, so it's not a state property. This is important in enthalpy because enthalpy is a state property, which means that we can add and subtract values of enthalpy to find delta H.

A state property is a quantity whose value is independent of the path taken to reach a specific value. In this class, pressure, temperature, volume, enthalpy, density, and heat capacity are considered state properties. Work and heat are not because they depend on the path taken. For enthalpy, it means that its value will be determined by the current state of the reaction. State properties can be added and subtracted.

A state property is independent on how the quantity of the substance was prepared. Energy, pressure, volume, and temperature, density, and heat capacity are all state properties.

A state property "is not dependent on path taken to obtain that state." Examples would include E(nergy), P(ressure), V(olume), T(emperature), Density, and Heat Capacity.

A state property doesn't depend on the path taken to get to that state but just the state itself.
