State functions do not care about the process to get the value. As Lavelle said in class, because this doesn't matter, you can add them up since they are specific points.

Since state functions are based on the end state of a system, they can be added without concern. This is because they represent a specific phase/time after the reaction has reached equilibrium.

state functions must be additive because they depend on the endpoints and not the "in-between" values. taking the mountain example used in class, to measure the altitude of the hike, you subtract the final altitude-initial altitude, disregarding any other altitudes in the middle.
