The use alternative fuels as an energy source is intended to address concerns about fossil fuels, such as its high carbon dioxide emissions, which is an important factor in global warming.

The combustion of fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere which contributes to global warming. Some alternatives for fossil fuels are ethanol, methane, and biodiesel. One way that this could be asked on the midterm is calculating the heat of combustion.

Also, by global warming, the ecological environment would be significantly changed, leading to the extinguish of many species because they cannot adapt the new ecological environment anymore. The destruction on the ecosystem might be so severe that even ecosystems that cover large areas and sustain numerous species might crash.

Burning fossil fuels leads to an increase in carbon emissions, leading to effects such as global warming. Is this important to know for this course?
