Temperature through Phase Changes

Postby Quinton Sprague 1A » Wed Jan 20, 2021 11:37 am

"Because heat is required during the melting or boiling (phase transition), temperature of sample remains constant even though heat is being supplied"

**Thought this was pretty cool and the first time I heard about this.**
EDIT: Just watched further in lecture and see he used the same graph, oh well.

I was wondering what exactly deltaQ is representing in this graph. I understand it is heat supplied but what does this variable verbally represent? Is it just change in heat energy?

I believe Q is just the symbol used for heat. So yes, deltaQ would mean change in heat.

Yes! It was briefly mentioned in lecture that deltaQ or qp is equal to the change in heat, deltaH, or enthalpy - the amount of heat absorbed or released in a reaction.

DeltaQ is the equivalent to enthalpy as I'm pretty sure this is the same type of graph that Dr. Lavelle used in his lecture.
