Define Phase Change

Postby Melissa Solis 1H » Sat Jan 23, 2021 11:13 pm

What does phase change mean specifically? Or is it just a solid changing into a liquid?

I think a phase change is just a change in the state of matter.
For example:
-When you heat liquid water, it undergoes a phase change from liquid to gas
-When you cool liquid water, it undergoes a phase change from liquid to solid
-etc.

Phases are solid, liquid, gas. A phase change is any time that a substance changes from one phase to another: solid to liquid, liquid to gas, gas to liquid, liquid to solid, solid to gas, gas to solid. Melting, freezing, boiling, etc. are examples of phase changes.

Phase change is when a phase (solid, gas, and liquid) either melting, boiling, or freezing. The process of a phase changing to another phase is a phase change. For example, ice that melts to water is a phase change: it is melting.

A phase change occurs when a substance is either heated or cooled and changes from one state to another. For example, when a solid is heated it may change phases to liquid or gas. The reverse can also occur when a change in pressure or temperature causes a change from gas to liquid or solid. Hope this helps!

A phase change refers to the chemical state a substance is when it's converting from one phase to another. An important thing to note is that when a substance is undergoing a phase change, it is neither the phase that it previously was nor is it the phase that it will eventually become -- it is in an intermediate state.

A phase change is when a substance changes from one state of matter to another (gas to liquid, solid to liquid, etc.). These occur at the melting point and boiling point, for example. These are the temperatures where such phase changes can occur.

There are three states: Liquid, gas and solid.
Phase change is when one of the states of matter go from one state to another. In this case liquid to solid, solid to liquid, gas to liquid, liquid to solid, are all phase changes. This can happen either physically or chemically :D

Phase change when a substance goes from one state (solid, liquid, gas) to a different phase. Its the change in molecular bonds to form a new state of this substance.

It is important to note that when a substance undergoes a phase change, it will take place under different temperate conditions, such as melting and boiling point.

It is when energy is applied in the form of heat to shift molecules from one phase to another. Some examples include solid to liquid and liquid to gas. A phase change can also happen when energy is released in the form of heat. Some examples of this include a gas to a liquid and a liquid to a solid.

To add on to what everyone else has said, when you look at a phase change graph, each new state is represented as a line with a new slope. So when the slope of the line changes, the phase is changing for that substance.

During a phase change, matter changes from one phase to another, either through the addition of energy by heat and the transition to a more energetic state, or from the removal of energy by heat and the transition to a less energetic state. Some phase changes include melting, vaporization, sublimation, condensation and freezing.

The official definition of phase change is as follows: a phase change is when matter changes to from one state (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) to another.

So, essentially, a phase change occurs whenever matter goes from one state to another. There is a diagram (http://www.chemistry.wustl.edu/~edudev/LabTutorials/CourseTutorials/bb/Thermochem/images/PhaseChanges.jpg) that I found useful to memorize the names for all phase changes. Most of them are familiar to us, since we often use them in our daily life, but I had to memorize some of them, such as sublimation and deposition, just in case, as I wasn't as familiar with those terms.

A phase change is essentially when a substance changes form from one phase (solid, liquid, gas, plasma) to another. This can also doesn't have to go in only one direction. This can be solid to liquid, liquid to gas, it can even be solid to gas. These are all possible in reverse as well.

A phase change specifically means when a substance transitions from one phase to another. These phases include solid, liquid, gas, plasma, etc. These phase transitions are completely reversible and do not change the component of the substance - just its state.

A phase change is when matter transitions from one state to another. There are three different phases to transition between: solid, liquid, and gas. Melting is when the solid transitions to the liquid and evaporation is when the liquid transitions to the gas. Alternatively, condensation is when the gas transitions to a liquid and freezing is when liquid transitions to a solid. Lastly, sublimation is when the solid shifts immediately to a gas and deposition is when gas immediately shifts to a solid (as opposed to condensing into a liquid and so forth).

The phases are solid, liquid, and gas. The phase changes are any phase changing into another: for example, solid to gas is sublimation. There are different enthalpies for each phase change such as the enthalpy of vaporization or the enthalpy of fusion.

A phase change just refers to a change in state matter whether that be solid to gas or solid to liquid or gas to liquid or liquid to gas. Any of these and the rest are changes of one state to another. Hence, it allows us to see when the particle changes different states.

Phase change means when a substance changes its state of matter. For instance water going from liquid to solid than gas, each step is a phase change.

A phase change is usually going from one state of matter to another. It's important to keep in mind that temperature does not change during a phase change. I recommend looking at the graph of phase changes for water since that helped me understand what exactly was going on.

Phase change is basically when substances (solid, liquid, gas) change into a different state. The substance is either melting (solid to liquid) or vaporizing (liquid to gas). Phase changes occur in a constant temperature.

phase change is when it goes from one state to another (melting, freezing, etc)

Hi,

A phase change is defined as any transition from one of three states of matter covered in the course (solid, liquid, gas).

For instance, a block of ice (solid) melting in water (liquid) is a phase change. Water vapor (gas) condensing into water (liquid) is also a phase change.

Hope this helps! :)

A phase change is any time a substance changes its state of matter. This would mean a solid, liquid, or gas changing to any other state that it is not currently in.

Hi, a phase change is a change in the state of matter, and its chemical composition isn't changed. A phase change could be a solid changing to liquid, a liquid changing to gas, etc. Hope this helps!
