weak/strong bases and acids
What is a good indicator to help figure out if a bases/acid is weak or strong.

Re: weak/strong bases and acids
The textbook has a list of what it considers strong acids and bases, so anything other than those is normally considered weak as a start point. Other things to look at include how well the molecules dissociate and stay that way, which would suggest something strong. If we were really looking to examine what would make them strong or weak, we could look at their structures to determine which ones will be the most stable/which state it will be most stable in (its original molecule or its conjugates) as a way to tell, but this is something that is going to take more time to draw out and picture.

memorize the list of those listed, that way you could classify all others as not.

Re: weak/strong bases and acids
I just memorized the list of strong acids and bases and anything that is not on that list I consider to be weak and that has worked best for me.

Re: weak/strong bases and acids
In the case of acids, a low pKa or a high Ka is an indicator of a strong acid. Whereas for a base, a low pKb and/or a high Kb is an indicator of a strong base

Do any of you guys know if we are expected to know if something is a weak or strong base off of memorization for the midterm?

Re: weak/strong bases and acids
I memorized the list of strong acids and bases and if an acid or base is not listed on that, I classify it as weak!
