Textbook Problem 4B11

Postby Shannon Moore 2L » Wed Feb 17, 2021 4:37 pm

I understand that during melting heat (+q) is absorbed and during condensation heat is released (-q), but how do we obtain positive/negative w values for these processes?

Delta U=q+w
During melting heat is absorbed so q is positive. The change is occurring at a constant temperature so the change in energy=0 so w has to be negative.

During condensation heat is released and q is negative. Similarly the change is occurring at a constant temperature so the change in energy=0 so w has to be positive.
