oxidation number change
I was wondering how does increasing or decreasing the oxidation affect a chemical or problem. (Did not have the best HS chem class)

Re: oxidation number change
Hi! In the context of electrochem, oxidation of a compound causes it to lose electrons. This is important since the oxidation thus drives part of the electric current in a Galvanic cell. It happens at the anode as well.
In context of these reactions, you'll need to be able to write the equation for when a metal ion is oxidized, or loses an electron, in order to understad the transfer of energy with the cathode in a Galvanic cell.

I think Lavelle covered it but I dont exactly remember. What exactly is the oxidation number and when is it altered?
Thank you in advance for your help!

The oxidation number is the number of electrons an atom gains or loses in order to form bonds. For this class, we need to memorize that "H" has an oxidation number of +1 (unless it's in H2), and "O" has an oxidation number of -2 (unless its in O2).

Re: oxidation number change
Oxidation number represents how electrons move. So for example, oxygen usually has and oxidation number of -2 which means its pulling two extra electrons and sorta holding onto them. This can be scene in water where the oxygen side of the compound becomes negatively charged and the hydrogen side of the compound becomes positively charged.

Re: oxidation number change
Oxidation number is the number of electrons gained or lost due to forming a bond. A negative oxidation number means the atom gained electrons when forming the bond because it is based on charge.
Re: oxidation number change
The oxidation number is the number assigned to an element in chemical combination

Re: oxidation number change
Oxidation number stand for how the electrons moved, whether that was a gain of electrons (negative oxidation number) or a loss of electrons (positive oxidation number).
