Thermodynamics vs. Thermochemistry

Postby Rachel Chan 1B » Wed Jan 19, 2022 12:18 pm

I know we are not on thermodynamics yet, but I wanted clarification on the difference between thermodynamics and thermochemistry. Thank you!

Hello! From what I know, thermodynamic is the study of heat, work, and heat conversions including other forms of energy. Thermochemistry is a branch of thermodynamics that studies the heat given off or absorbed in chemical reactions. Hope this helps!

I'm pretty sure thermodynamics is like an umbrella term for the study of all heat reactions

Hi! So, thermodynamics focuses on the relationships between heat, work, temperature, and energy. It also explains how heat changes within a system and how it affects its surroundings. Thermochemistry is more of a specific branch of thermodynamics, and it solely focuses on the relationship between heat and a chemical reaction. This means that thermochemistry is the study and analysis of what occurs when heat is released or absorbed in a chemical reaction. I hope this helps!
