Difference between Heat and Enthalpy

Postby Audrey Banzali-Marks 1A » Wed Jan 19, 2022 6:28 pm

Dr. Lavelle mentioned that enthalpy is a state property while heat is not. Why is that? What is the difference between heat and enthalpy?

Enthalpy is just heat under conditions of constant pressure.

Enthalpy is the amount of heat released or absorbed at constant pressure and is a state property. Just heat is not a state property since we don't know that it is under a constant pressure.

Heat is always the energy in transit, meaning it can cross the system boundaries whereas Enthalpy refers to the total heat content in a system.

Enthalpy is defined as how much heat is released or absorbed by a system at a constant pressure. This wont change no matter the transition and thus is a state function. On the other hand, heat is not a state function because it depends on the path taken.

Enthalpy is different than heat as enthalpy is at a constant pressure and a state property.
