Phase Change

Postby Andrew Nguyen 2K » Thu Jan 20, 2022 1:18 am

Can someone reiterate why the temperature does not change during a phase transition.

Instead of raising the temperature, the heat energy is used to break the bonds of the substance during a phase change.

During a phase change, the energy applied to the system is used to break the intermolecular bonds between molecules. A previous response implied that the intramolecular bonds within the substance would be broken which would be true for a chemical reaction, but not a physical change like a phase change.

During the phase change, the heat goes to breaking bonds instead of raising the temperature.

Temperature does not change during phase change because the temperature is being absorbed by water as it needs heat to convert to a different phase (endothermic). Since all the temperature is being absorbed by the system, its environment won't have any affect on temperature.

During a phase change, the heat being added to the system is being used to break bonds, as it goes through the phase change the temperature will not increase because the energy is being used this way.

Generally speaking, does it take a similar amount of energy to change phases (solid to liquid and then liquid to gas)?

For phase changes, the heat is used to break the bonds. Because of this, the temperature is not raised.

Because heat absorbed is used to break intermolecular forces between particles instead of increasing temperature.

Because the heat is used to break bonds in the phase change it cannot be used to raise the temperature.

The temperature does not change because the heat energy is not expelled in raising the temperature of the sample. Instead, the heat is applied to breaking the intermolecular forces between molecules. This is what allows for the substance to change from one phase of matter to another.
