Heat Capacity

Postby asheagg3I » Tue Jan 25, 2022 11:01 pm

Hi,

Can someone give examples of heat property as an intensive and extensive property? It was mentioned in the lecture and I wanted some clarification.

Hello,
From what I have in my notes, heat capacity is an extensive property because it depends on the amount of substance so an example would be just heat capacity . Heat capacity is an intensive property when it doesn't depend on the amount of substance so an example would be specific heat property. Hope this helps!

If you would like to think about a non-chemistry related connection. The best way I think of it is driving to a destination. For an intensive property it could be like when you have two different routes but they both lead you to the same destination. But if you think about the time you put into the driving to the destination, that could be an extensive property because the different routes gave you different arrival times to the destination.

Extensive property is dependent on the amount, whereas intensive property is not. Heat capacity is an example of an intense property, while specific heat capacity is an example of an extensive property.

Here's what I have in my notes:
An intensive property, like density of water, does not depend on volume.
Weight is an extensive property, as it may be altered by volume.
Hope this helps!

An intensive property is one that does not depend on the amount of mater present within a reaction while an extensive property does depend on the amount of material present. As a result, we could conclude that mass is an extensive property. On the other hand, molar mass is still considered to be an intensive property. I hope this helps!
