Different types of systems

Postby elizabethrojas1G » Fri Jan 08, 2016 5:34 pm

I'm really confused on the differences between open, closed, & isolated systems.
One sample question would be like why is a plant an open system? If someone could explain the systems to me in detail that'd be great. Thanks!

Open System: mass and energy can cross boundaries
Closed System: mass cannot cross, but energy can
Isolated System: neither mass nor energy can cross

A plant would be an open system since it can absorb water (mass).

What would be an example of a closed and an isolated system?

An example of a closed system would be some type of liquid in a closed container like a jar where the matter is not released, but energy is exchanged with its surroundings. An example of an isolated system is coffee in a closed, insulated container where the matter and energy are neither exchanged with its surroundings.
