phase change curve
If there is ice and water in a beaker, is it possible to raise the temperature of the water without completely melting the ice first?

Re: phase change curve
The temperature of the entire system should increase as heat increases. Water and ice included.

Re: phase change curve
Isabella is 100% correct in that the whole system would increase. Both the water and the ice will begin to heat up but it may take a few degrees more for the ice to melt while in the water completely.

Re: phase change curve
During some parts of the phase change curve (where the slope is equal to zero), the temperature of the system is actually not increasing, even though the ice may be melting. When the temperature does increase (as demonstrated by the increasing slope of the graph), the temperature of the entire system increases.
