mL vs L

Postby Hawa Kamara 1F » Sat Mar 12, 2022 3:11 am

When solving the problems mainly for thermochemistry... does it matter when solving the problem is the volume is L vs mL.... when it is an exam what would think is preferred? or it just depends what the problem is asking?? or do we always have to convert to a certain unit regardless of the anwser??

hi there!

I think it would depend on what units the question is asking for, as well as the context of the question. As long as you keep the units consistent during your work, then you can just change it to whatever the question is asking for when you get to the end.

You might be given either mL or L, but pay attention to what units they want the final answer in. There is a difference, so if you give the wrong unit your calculation will be wrong.

In this situation most important is to have all terms with same units! Watch out for L in R as that can be easy to miss.

Volume should almost always be calculated in terms of L! If the information is given in terms of mL, try to convert to L before calculating. If answer choices are in mL, then you can convert back to mL.

Generally, L is needed for the formulas, so you may have to convert. Just keep track of the units required by your formulas, and then double check what units the answer is asking for.

As long as you are consistent with your units you should be fine however it is important to remember that molarity is moles/liter, so you need to make sure that for molarity calculations you are using liters as opposed to mililiters. Hope this helps!

It just depends on which unit is asked for in the problem. The final answer should be consistent with the units that are used throughout. Other than that I don't think one is preferred over the other

Usually we will be given other parts of the equation that will hint at whether we should use L or mL. I found that a lot of the times it is usually L we use but again, just make sure to looks at the other aspects to determine

To be safe, I would keep your units of volume in L.
