Bonds Formed v Bonds Broken

Postby JasmineAlberto4J » Mon Jan 25, 2016 10:35 pm

For bond enthalpy questions how do decide which ones are formed and which ones are broken?

You have to draw the Lewis structures for the molecules in the equation, and from that you can see what bonds would have to be broken on the left and formed on the right to turn the reactants into products. So basically just look for the differences between the structures of the reactants and products and remember to multiply by the number of moles of each molecule to get the right number of bonds broken or formed.
