Why are bond enthalpies always positive?

hello -- so bond enthalpies are always positive because it requires energy input to break chemical bonds, while energy is released when bonds form.

because the value is the amount of energy it takes to break a bond, which always requires energy

Bond enthalpies are always positive because they represent the energy required to break bonds (which takes energy and is positive), not the energy released when bonds are formed (which would be negative).
