relationship between endothermic/exothermic and q

Postby Franca Park 3J » Fri Mar 11, 2016 8:53 pm

for exothermic reactions why is q positive and for endothermic reactions why is q negative?
if q is the heat required then shouldn't endothermic reactions have a positive q because endothermic reactions require heat?

Other way around. exothermic is -q because you're releasing heat (i.e. the thing releasing heat is losing energy, so it's losing q). endothermic is +q for the opposite reason.
