This question may have been asked, but I am new to Chemistry Community and am overwhelmed by all the posts on the forums. May someone please explain the difference between bond enthalpies and standard enthalpies of formation? For example, why is the bond enthalpy for F2 equal to 158 kJ/mol, but the standard enthalpy of formation for F2 is equal to 0? Thank you.

If you simply look in your book at pages 300 and 294, they define bond enthalpies and enthalpies of formation, respectively, in great detail. The course reader also has these definitions, as well as many other sources.
