Bond Enthalpy versus standard Enthalpies of formation
How do we distinguish between when to use bond Enthalpy or standard Enthalpy?

Based on the textbook problems Lavelle assigned, the problem may tell you which method it wants you to use. If not, I'm p sure that you'll be provided w certain info (aka standard enthalpies of formation or bond enthalpies) which will push you towards using a certain method, and you'll solve the problem accordingly.
Re: Bond Enthalpy versus standard Enthalpies of formation
I believe the textbook problems do specifically state which method to use, in which the manner that each problem is presented in also seems to lend itself to using a certain method. However, if I do remember correctly, Lavelle did mention that sometimes a problem has some sort of freedom in terms of choosing how to approach it. If anything, I am sure future quizzes and exams will either specifically state which method to use or the fact that we are free to choose any.
