Bond Enthalpies

Postby Jeffreyho97 » Thu Jan 19, 2017 2:43 pm

For bond enthalpies, if all that is given is the formula of a chemical compound, how would I know which bonds are broken, and what products are created? Also, are the enthalpies for the broken and formed bonds usually given in the problem? If not, where can they be found?

You would have to draw out the Lewis structures for each compound in order to determine the bonds between certain atoms. But I just assume all bonds in the structures are broken and then reformed in my calculations (because any that weren't actually broken would just cancel out since you subtract the energy to break the bond and add the energy to form the bond). There are some bond enthalpies given in Table 8.7 on p.300 in the textbook.
