Could it be because the standard enthalpy of formation of an element in its most stable form is zero, and H+ is in its most stable form because it's only made up of one element?

Could it be that whenever H+ protons react with matter, they attach to pre-existing bonds? If so, then there shouldn't be any bonds breaking or forming, resulting in no change in energy (an enthalpy of 0).
My reasoning for this is based on the fact that energy is released or absorbed when bonds are formed or broken, respectively.
