Standard Enthalpy of Formation Course Reader example

Postby Jamie_Cole_2N » Sun Jan 22, 2017 10:50 pm

On page 17 of the course reader, there is a standard enthalpy of formation example about using graphite and gaseous hydrogen and oxygen to form ethanol,
Why is the enthalpy of reaction divided by 2?

The standard reaction enthalpy is divided by 2 because the example is looking for the formation of 1 mole of CH3CH2OH, whereas the rxn enthalpy gives the kJ amount for 2 moles of CH3CH2OH. Hope this helps.
