How do we know when the element is in its formation state?

You can tell by looking at the periodic table or by just noticing that certain elements like oxygen are always written as O2(gas) because realistically we never have oxygen (O) by itself in nature since it would be too reactive to stay that way :)

In lecture Lavelle said that for common elements such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon (elements towards the top right) we would need to memorize their formation state. However, for more unfamiliar elements we would be told their formation state if necessary.

Remember that the periodic table is split into metals and nonmetals and that metals are typically solids at standard conditions and nonmetals are typically gases. Also, remember that mercury and bromine are liquids at standard conditions!
