Lewis structures for bond enthalpies

Postby Lucia H 2L » Thu Jan 18, 2018 1:13 pm

For questions on bond enthalpies, should we expect to have to know which bonds are broken and formed for each molecule/draw Lewis structures? I took 14A a while ago and I want to know if I should spend time reviewing that content for 14B tests.

I think we do need to know which bonds are formed and are broken because it will affect the value of the enthalpy of the reaction. The lewis structures are helpful to see which bonds are broken and formed.

For me at least, drawing the Lewis structures gives me a really good visual as to what bonds are broken and what bonds are being formed. So I would personally recommend reviewing the Lewis structures to help prepare you for the tests.

Just to add on, when bonds are broken (require energy, + ) and when bonds are formed (released energy, -).
