Why when a bond enthalpy for a molecule is greater than that of another one is the the molecule more stable?

Because when the bond enthalpy is less it takes less energy to break therefore, it is less stable. Bonds that take more energy are more stable because more energy is need to break the bonds.

Adding onto what Abby said. If something is harder to break, then it is more stable. If you need more energy to break something, then it is harder to break.

More stable bonds have more negative (less) potential energies, which means more energy is required to break the bonds. Therefore bonds with greater potential energy (less negative) are less stable and require less energy to break.

Hi Abby!!! Your question is really good. The reason it is more stable is because the bonds are harder to break!

The stronger the bonds, the more energy it takes to require to break the bonds, therefore having a higher bond enthalpy.

If it takes more energy to break the bond, that means the bond is very stronger, and the attraction between the nuclei of the atoms is also very strong. According to Coulomb's law, stronger attractions mean a lower energy arrangement, which means more stability. Thus strong, high energy bonds have a lot of stability.

Stability is an indicator of how strong bonds are because the more stable something is, the more resistant it is to perturbations. So strong bonds should be able to withstand or require more energy in order to break them.
