### Bond enthalpies

In a test if we are asked to solve for the enthalpy of a reaction will we be given a chart with the enthalpies for the different bonds?

### Re: Bond enthalpies

I think we would be given certain bond enthalpies value instead of a whole chart

### Re: Bond enthalpies

We will be given bond enthalpies and we will have to determine reaction enthalpy depending on which bonds are broken and which bonds are formed.

### Re: Bond enthalpies

Are these enthalpies Okay to use because I think Dr. Lavelle said that they were the most innacurate

### Re: Bond enthalpies

If the bond enthalpies are given and/or the question asks for us to calculate the reaction enthalpy by using the given table/values, I would use them and solve the problem that way. I think Dr. Lavelle told us that bond enthalpies are the least accurate way just as a note and maybe for conceptual questions, but we should just use whatever is given to us to solve the problems.

Another key thing to remember is that to find the reaction enthalpy by bond enthalpies, deltaHrxn = sum(enthalpies bonds broken) - sum(enthalpies bonds formed).

Return to “Reaction Enthalpies (e.g., Using Hess’s Law, Bond Enthalpies, Standard Enthalpies of Formation)”
