Hess's Law Details

Postby YashDeshmukh1D » Tue Jan 23, 2018 6:13 pm

When using Hess's law to find the enthalpy of formation for a compound, is it necessary for all the other reactants and products to have the same coefficients as the original equation? Also, can the final equations have fractions as coefficients?

Yes to both questions. You will need to manipulate the other reactants/products in order to get to the original equation.

Also, though final equations can have fractions has coefficients, we typically use whole numbers instead, just so that it's easier to calculate and work with.
