Hess's Law

Postby Jesse_torres2H » Wed Jan 24, 2018 3:32 pm

For questions involving Hess's law are we going to be given the reactions involved or are we going to have to write them ourselves?

I'm sure it will depend on the question, but I think most questions will give us the reactions with the reaction enthalpies.

From what I've seen, we will be given a few steps or reactions and their enthalpy's and the final reaction. Then the question will ask us for the enthalpy change of the final reation.

I agree, while the questions may differ on what they ask for using the final reaction, the problems should give the additional reactions and enthalpies we'll need to complete the final reaction.

I agree that it will depend on the question and what we've covered in class. I feel like for the most part we would be given the reactions we need and the one we are looking for however there was a homework problem where we needed to know the combustion equations.

For the most part, we are usually given anything that is needed to solve that problem whether directly or indirectly given to us.

Yeah, seems like we often don't have to memorize a lot of things just for the sake of memorizing them. Instead, we're given pieces and necessary info: the enthalpies and reactions to reach the final reaction and get its enthalpy and that demonstrates our understanding.

I think either type of question can be asked. He can either give us the equation, or lets say there is a problem on the change in enthalpy of combustion, we would be expected to know how to write and balance the equations of combustion that correspond to the enthalpy of combustion data we are given.
