Water gas is an inexpensive, low-grade fuel that can be made from coal. (a) Is the production of water gas exothermic or endothermic?

In the reaction given in the problem, the reactants are carbon (s) and water vapor (g) and the products are carbon monoxide (g) and hydrogen (g). Why is the reaction enthalpy of this reaction indicative of whether the production of water gas is endothermic or exothermic if water is merely a reactant and not a product in this reaction?

Well we know that if the enthalpy of a reaction is positive, that reaction is endothermic. This is true because for an endothermic reaction, we can treat heat as a reactant (Heat is required for the reaction to occur). On the other hand, if the enthalpy of a reaction is negative, the reaction is exothermic. This is true because for and exothermic reaction, we can treat heat as a product (heat is given off in the course of the reaction).
