For problem 8.49 on the homework, I am a little bit confused on how to first approach the problem. The solution manual starts solving the question using the approach of the PV=nRT equation. However, how do we know just based on the wording of the question that there is a net production of one mole of gas? It simply asks "What is the change in the intern energy for the reaction of 1.00 mol OF_{2}?

The question gives you you deltaH (enthalpy) which can be related to the change in internal energy. Delta H=Delta U+PDelta V. Then PDeltaV can be changed to deltanRT. You know the net change in moles would be one because the products has a total of # and the reactants has a total of 2, making the change equal to one.

To look for the net production of gas, you simply subtract the moles of the gas on the product side by the moles of gas from the reactants side. The one mole of OF2 is just refering for the final answer to be in per mole.
