Bond Enthalpies

When using bond enthalpies to solve for the enthalpy of formation, does it only give us the value of the compound in its gas form?

Yes, bond enthalpies are only valid for compounds in the gas state. If you want to use this method, you must convert all substances to the gas phase first, then solve for the delta H of the reaction.

to convert to the gas phase you use the enthalpy of sublimation or vaporization and take those values into account when calculating the total enthalpy
