are we just assuming benzene with resonance?? on the final would we do the same thing?

I'm assuming that we are, since benzene has resonance in actuality, but whether benzene has resonance or not doesn't seem relevant to the solving of the problem, if that's a concern at all - the problem asks about irreversible work on a macro scale, so you don't have to worry about breaking resonant bonds or anything.
