Bonds being broken in reaction

Postby Deepika Pugalenthi 1A » Sat Jan 26, 2019 4:24 pm

When calculating bond enthalpies, what is the relevance of knowing that the entire bond is broken? Is it to understand the conceptual aspect or do the bonds play a role in the calculation?

the stronger the bond, the more energy it requires to break it

During a chemical reaction, if a bond is broken, it must be broken completely so that new bonds can form. Also, different bonds have different strength and thus nees different amount of energy to break.

It is both conceptual and applicable. There were two ways to look at it, the specific direct bonds that were broken and subtract the energy needed to form new specific bonds from it. Or you can look at all the energies that form bonds in a molecule and subtract all the energies that form bonds in the new molecule from it to give you the same answer for bond enthalpies.

The stronger the bonds the more energy is required to break the bonds apart. For instance, a triple bond would require more energy to break apart than a single bond and would therefore have a higher enthalpy value.
