Breaking Bonds
How do you know exactly which bonds are broken/formed to avoid doing the longer calculation?
Re: Breaking Bonds
You need to visualize the lewis structures of the individual molecules and deduce which bonds have been added to the original central atom of the molecule.

Re: Breaking Bonds
Dr. Lavelle drew out the Lewis structures of both the products and reactants and highlighted which bonds were added/broken. Though, it would be helpful to do the longer calculation of all the bonds just to check also!

Re: Breaking Bonds
It is best to draw out the Lewis structures of all the reactants and the products in order to tell which bonds are broken/formed. From there, look for the difference in the reactants to the products of each atom to atom bond in order to tell what the net difference is. From the net difference, you would just have to calculated the delta H of the ones broken and formed instead of having to count and calculate all the bonds you see in the reactants and all the bonds in the products.

Re: Breaking Bonds
I recommend drawing all lewis structures out and observe what has changed. Visually seeing it helps a lot.
