How does systems at equilibrium relate to reversible and irreversible reactions?

If a system is at equilibrium the external pressure is equal to the internal pressure. In an irreversible system, the external and internal pressures are different and therefore work must be done in order to restore the equilibrium. Because of this instability, the system will expand if the external pressure was originally less than the internal. Similarly, in a reversible system, the pressures are different, but the change in volume is so small (by a millionth) and therefore the work formula requires to take the integral of external Pressure in respect to the change of volume.
