Bonds and energy release

Postby EllaBerry » Thu Jan 31, 2019 8:57 pm

Why is it that when a bond is formed it uses energy and when it is broken it releases energy?

When a bond is broken, energy is required. When a bond is formed energy is released.
Breaking Bonds → Energy Absorbed
Forming Bonds → Energy Released

To break the bond, you have to fight against the bond, so energy is required in bon breaking. Potential energy is stored in molecules and this energy is released when bonds forms. Things tend to go to the lowest energy state possible
