### Heat of combustion

How can I use the heat of combustion to calculate the reaction enthalpy?

You can solve this problem by just adding the $\Delta H_{c}$s correctly. In this problem all you would need to do is change -1560kJ to +1560kJ because $C_{2}H_{6}$ is the product in this reaction. You also need to multiply -286kJ by 2 because there are two moles of $H_{2}$. The -1300kJ of $C_{2}H_{2}$ does not need to be altered because it just moves down. Then you just add all the new $\Delta H_{c}$s you computed to get your answer.

Return to “Reaction Enthalpies (e.g., Using Hess’s Law, Bond Enthalpies, Standard Enthalpies of Formation)”
