Delta U stands for the change in internal energy of the system. Delta u = q (heat) + w(work). The units are in joules!

delta U is the change in internal energy
You calculate it with delta U = q+w, where q = heat and w = work.

When there is no expansion or compression, which is work, we can say that Delta U is equal to the q value.

Delta U is the internal energy of the system/reaction, or the total store of energy in a system. One way delta U can be calculated is by subtracting the internal energy of the initial system from the internal energy of the final system.
