List of elements that have value of zero

Postby aphung1E » Wed Jan 29, 2020 9:29 pm

Can someone give a general list of common elements/compounds we will be using that have a bond enthalpy value of zero?

These will typically be elements in their standard, lowest energy state. For elements found as diatomic molecules (Br, I, N, Cl, H, O, F), they will have an enthalpy of zero when found as diatomic gases, with the exception of Br2 being found in liquid form and I2 being in solid form. For other elements, it will typically be when they are found in elemental states (for example, carbon as C(s)). General rule of thumb: if there isn’t a value for an element in the tables provided and you’re not being asked to solve for it, chances are its enthalpy is zero.
