Bond Enthalpies

How do we know which bonds are broken/formed when given a reaction? Do we have to draw out the lewis structures?

you don't have to draw out the lewis structures but it is very helpful because then you can visualize which bonds are broken and which bonds are formed.

Yeah i'd suggest drawing the lewis structures for both reactants and products and designated which bonds are broken and which are formed. Then: ΔH(formed) - ΔH(broken).

Drawing the lewis structure helps a lot to visualize which bonds need to be broken and formed. In worst case scenario, you could calculate if all bonds were broken and all new bonds reformed.
