Is there a way to figure out the bonds that are being formed and broken without having to draw the structure of the molecule? For example, in the reaction of , would there be a way to figure out the bonds being broken and formed without drawing?
Each reaction is different, so I don't think there's a reliable pattern you can follow for bond enthalpies. You can try to visualize the reaction if the molecules are small enough, but in the end, your safest bet is drawing the bonds.
Bond enthalpies should be given. The only type of problem that we would need bond enthalpy for is for calculating delta H, and subtracting the bonds formed from the bonds broken. In this case its usually helpful to draw out the structure.
Since single, double, and triple bonds all have different bond enthalpies, I believe the safest way to go about solving bond enthalpy question would be to draw out the lewis structure, so you can see the number of bonds formed between molecules.
Ya, I would simply draw out the Lewis Structures then compare the bonds. If one structure has 2 C-C bonds and the other has 1 C-C bond, then you can cancel 1 from each side to make the calculations easier.
