Determining Standard State

Postby Isabelle Hales 1J » Fri Jan 22, 2021 12:10 pm

Is there a general method to determining the standard state of a compound or is it something that we need to memorize?

Most likely you'll just need to memorize the most common ones (like O2, H2 are gasses, C is graphite, etc.). Though, I'm sure if you look up a standard enthalpy of formation table, it'll tell you the standard states of the compounds.

I was also wondering the same thing. I am assuming that the common compounds we use frequently in lecture (like H2, CH4, O2, etc) we would be expected to know. For compounds that we are not familiar with, I would assume their standard states would be provided.
