Sapling week 5/6 #3

Postby LReedy_3C » Sun Feb 14, 2021 12:33 pm

This question involved sorting phase changes by delta h and delta s, and I was wondering if there would ever be a situation where a phase change would have a delta h and a delta s with different signs?

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think there would be a situation where that happens. For each phase change, entropy increases from solid to liquid and liquid to gas, and the only way for these phase changes to occur is for heat to be inputted into the system. Thus, enthalpy must increase as well. From my understanding, the signs of the change in entropy and enthalpy would have to be the same, but someone else feel free to correct me!

I agree, I can't think of a situation where the signs would be opposite for the phase changes. I thought that was a bit of an odd sapling question too.
