How to find delta H of fusion

Postby Jaden Haskins 2E » Sat Mar 13, 2021 5:55 pm

Is there a formula to find the delta H of fusion or is it calculated through q=mC△T and other similar formulas? In the specific problem I am working with, you are given amount of heat absorbed, mass, and T(initial).

I believe you are usually given the delta H of fusion or vaporization, at least thats how it was on the previous tests. Is this a book problem? Maybe you have to look at an appendix?

You can also find delta H of fusion and vaporization on the equation sheet!

I think that for the final, it would be given in the problem if we need the value for calculations..!

Typically the enthalpy of fusion will be given in the question or in the equation sheet (in reality, it is experimentally determined). It cannot be calculated using q=mC△T as the temperature does not change during a phase change (the energy used to break intermolecular bounds as opposed to increasing the kinetic energy of molecules).

Since the temperature doesn't change during the phase change because the energy is used solely for breaking apart molecules, the equation with delta T does not work since that value would be zero.
